Despite a recognition that learning and development is a key component of talent retention, few Thai organisations are linking the two. “In our discussions with Thai organisations, we found that few Thai organisations are reaping the benefits of using learning technology solutions such as learning management systems and eLearning courseware” said Dion Groeneweg, CEO of the Cape Group. “There appears to be no clear linkage between the investment in learning technologies and talent management. The online learning that is being offered is not exciting and motivating enough to retain and develop their talent. So, the talent is still moving out and seeking for more learning opportunities.” The Cape Group first studied the adoption levels of eLearning in Thai organisations in 2005. The research found that for the majority of organisations interviewed, their eLearning solution and strategy was in its infancy and much needed to be done to fully realize the benefits of their investment. The Cape Group has returned to its original research participants to chart their progress, as well of a number of new companies who did not take part in the original research project. “We can’t see any progress especially in integration to HR systems. Only Learning systems are have been upgraded and more online courses have been added,” said Groeneweg. “Benefits continue to be limited to reducing HR administrative cost and tracking course participation.” Groenweg adds, “As long as eLearning remains separate from talent management, companies will not effectively develop their talent or provide the career and develop opportunities for their talent in a timely and effective manner.” This study, “Reaping the Benefits of Learning Technologies: How Thai Organisations are Using Learning Systems to Address their Talent Challenges”, highlights challenges Thai organisations face in linking learning practices and talent strategies. Research Background This research was conducted between February 2008 and April 2008. The Cape Group conducted in-depth interviews and discussions with 30 leading Thai organisations across multiple industries. This report will be available at www.capegroupglobal.com.
